Burnout is a significant concern in our modern culture. As we work, study, and side hustle sometimes, we are encouraged to push ourselves harder and farther every day, and sometimes shamed for taking the time they need to unwind and rest when we do not get adequate rest Burnout can occur. Today we explore Burnout, Its effects, and how we can combat it.
Definition
Burnout Syndrome, first discovered in the 1970s by Psychologist Herbert Freudenberger described as losing motivation, feelings of emptiness, and cynicism. If you work in an environment where you do not have much control, a high-stress, fast-paced environment, or have poor work-life balance, these feelings can come on much faster than they might otherwise.
Effects
As mentioned earlier, Burnout can lead to a loss of motivation, feelings of hopelessness, and even depression and anxiety. If you feel the following symptoms, you may be experiencing Burnout:
Excessive fatigue
Irritability
insomnia
Social Isolation
Please note that these could also be symptoms of Depression, and you should discuss any new or unusual symptoms with your doctor or mental health professional.
Treatment
Treating Burnout can be different for each person. For some people, Mindfulness exercises, taking time to breathe and work through how you’re feeling, work very well in combating Burnout; for others going to the gym or increasing physical activity works best. Even trying to eat bet better and avoiding caffeine can help.
