Last week we discussed a standard test for Depression. This week we're going to discuss a few common types of medication for Depression. Depression Medication is typically prescribed to help combat severe depression and should be taken as prescribed by your doctor. They can have a wide range of side effects and can interact with alcohol and even certain foods. three of the most popular types of antidepressants are

SSRIs

SSRI stands for Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitor. These are the most popular medications on the market, notable for having fewer and less severe side effects than other classes of Depression medication. Examples of this class are Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft.

 SNRIs

Designed to be more effective than SSRIs but clinical evidence on this point is inconclusive. They have a similar rate of effectiveness and similar side effects. Some respond better to SNRIs than SSRIs, and you may need to work with your doctor to find one that works for you. Examples of this class of medication are Effexor, Pristiq, and Cymbalta.

NDRIs

They are used to treat Depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder. It may also be prescribed for other Psychiatric uses. Wellbutrin is the only drug in this class.

Taking medication can be a big decision and is not an instant fix. Dealing with the potential side effects, finding a dosage, and even the medication that works for you is hard work, but if you think it could be right for you the work is well worth it. Until next time.
